IMG_9862Maine Granite History

The early quarries of Maine we’re bedrock to the State’s fledgling economy and the stone is featured in some prestigious buildings and monuments.  In 1900 eight columns from a Vinalhaven quarry, from each weighing 90 tons, were erected in New York’s Cathedral of St. John the Divine. The JFK Memorial in Arlington is graced with white granite from Stonington.

Cultural Diversity from Maines Quarries

In the mid to late 19th century demand for granite quarrymen encouraged immigrants from Sweden, Finland, Scotland, Ireland, Spain, and Italy to come to work as stonecutters. Thousands worked Maine’s quarries drilling rock, driving wedges or using explosives to break granite along grain lines, cutting stone to shape, and polishing the stone.

Maine Granite already has a story and this beautiful pendant, can add to your tale!
