What are you looking for?

This question we usually get from truck buyers and owners, but we seen more and more passenger car owners come to us with many of the same questions. How do I select the right hitch so I can tow my (fill in your answer _______ here).

First, you’ll need a hitch. Go with a quality unit that has a good warranty. You may pay a little bit more, but it will be worth it. Hitches are broken down into classes based on towing capacity in pounds. The higher the class number, the more the hitch can handle. There is also information in your owners manual about the maximum towing capacity for that particular vehicle. There should be no surprise here – in most cases, the bigger the vehicle, the more weight it can tow. But it doesn’t stop there.

This next part is important – when you buy your hitch, get one that is specifically made for your year, make and model. DO NOT buy a “universal” one! Why? Supposedly, the universal hitches will fit a gamut of vehicles, but you’ve heard the saying, “One size does not fit all”. In our experience, these hitches are a nightmare to install. Yes, they may be cheaper than a specific model hitch, but resist that temptation. You’ll be glad you did.

Third, if you’ll be towing any kind of a trailer, big or small, you’ll need a wiring kit and lights for your trailer if the trailer didn’t already come with it. In most cases, any kind of a trailer will block the vehicles regular tail lights. I’m sure you’ll want people behind you to know when you’re braking and turning! Like the hitch, be sure to get a wiring kit for your specific year, make and model – that will insure that everything will work properly when it’s all hooked up and it will prevent your vehicles electrical system from being overloaded. For example, it would be nice if the horn didn’t start going off when you used your turn signals!
