Horch Roofing was very pleased to receive a phone call last week telling them that they came in second place for Green and Energy Efficiency in Courier Publications’ Best of the Best of Knox County.

Horch Roofing began its Reroof and Recycle Program in in April 2010.  When Peter Horch started his roofing company ten years ago, he would drive his pickup truck to the Camden dump and drive down hill into the landfill to unload roofing debris by hand.  As time went by and his business grew, he stopped making these trips himself.  Five years later, while filling in for one of his employees, he was stunned to find that the same hole he once drove down into had become a huge mountain.  He had to drive uphill to deposit the roofing debris.

After attending the Juice Conference in Camden in November 2009, he began thinking about innovative ways to improve his company, starting with the unsettling fact that about 2 tons of his own re-roofing waste was ending up in a landfill each day.

The Horch Roofing team developed a plan to begin recycling 100% of its roofing debris.  They have all roofing debris transported to a company that converts waste into recycled products.  The debris is source-separated; the nails are cleaned and sent to the metal market, and the shingles are ground up and combined with other recycled products to become an aggregate that can be used on roads, parking lots, and other locations.

“Recycling and caring for the environment is part of our core values here at Horch Roofing,” shared owner Peter Horch, “and we take that commitment seriously. Thanks to all who voted for us, and all who recognize the value in working with a company that supports these core values.”

In early 2013, the Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce recognized Horch Roofing’s recycling efforts and green practices with the Green Business Award during their Annual Awards Gala, which took place at the Samoset Resort.  Horch Roofing would like to extend their gratitude to the Knox County community members who voted for them on their Best of the Best ballots.  For more information about their roofing business, give them a call or visit them on Route 90 in Warren, Maine.
