In researching, I found amber is not “tree sap” as I once believed. It is actually a glowing band-aid. Ancient trees, either damaged or reacting to abrupt climate exuded a resin as protection or to cover the hurt area. Fossilized, this resin becomes a gem. My esteem for amber jumped a couple notches when I found this out.
Yellow golden amber has a soft shimmering glow giving it a sunny disposition. Although amber is fossilized material from prehistoric trees and therefore softer than most gemstones, amber is a fine material for earrings, pendants and necklaces. Unlike faceted gems, Amber is generally shaped into cabochons and polished.
Back to amber’s most striking quality-the range of different colors that compliment any complexion. As well as the usual yellow-orange-brown that is associated with the color “amber”, amber itself can range from a whitish color through a pale lemon yellow, to brown and almost black. Other uncommon colors include red amber (sometimes known as “cherry amber”), green amber, and even blue amber, which is rare and highly sought after.
Much valued from antiquity to the present as a gemstone, amber is made into a variety of custom jewelry (it’s also an ingredient in perfumes). The bulk of amber in the world is found in the Baltic region of Poland and Russia. These origins help trace trade routes by how the gem found it’s way to all corners of the earth.
In some instances, like the Americas, Amber actually floated across the ocean and found itself in the hands on Native Americans. They recognized amber’s glowing, magical quality and, of course, fashioned their finds into jewelry.
At Pyramid Studios we find amber a glowing addition to any jewelry box.
