Belfast.  Come one, come all.  Bring the whole family. The UMaine Hutchinson Center will host its first annual GEOCACHE DASH! on Saturday, July 27th beginning at 8:30 a.m. with registration.  From 9:00 to 11:45 there will be three different times for multiple sessions (there is a fee for the workshops).  Registration for the Geocache Hunt only (which is free) will be from 11:45 to 12:30.  The actual Dash! will begin at 12:30 and end at 4:00 pm.

Everyone should return with their completed passports for Passport Verification from 4:00 to 5:00 pm.  At 5:00 pm there will be drawings for the prizes and you must be present to win.  The agenda is also available on our website (www.hutchinsoncenter.umaine.edu).  Remember, the actual GeoCache Dash Hunt is free (from 12:30 to 4 – please register and pick up your passport between 11:45 and 12:30).

For those of you who want to get on the road and begin your Hunt at 12:30, there will be a healthy bag lunch prepared by Belfast Coop for sale for $10.  If you register for the morning workshop sessions, lunch is included in the registration fee.

Geocaching is a deceptively easy, hi-tech game of hide and seek.  In the GeoCache Dash!, the UMaine Hutchinson Center is the hider!  We scout out the best places to show off Belfast and Waldo County and hide a cache (a container with a log book and stamp) in order to enticed cachers to return again in the future.

Our caches will join over 300 active caches in Waldo County for people to find.  The seekers are the attendees.  Seekers load the coordinates of the caches onto their GPS at noon on July 27th then try to find 20 specific cache containers, set out exclusively for this event.  Once they have found all 20 of the hidden caches or as many as they can find by 4 pm, seekers are eligible to win other prizes, including a custom UMaine “travel bug.”  Other prizes include:  3 GPS units, 10 Trackable Geocoins, 5 Gazetteers, pottery from Mainely Pottery, One Free Week of Campership for 8-13 year old at Camp NEOFA in Liberty, $10 free merchandise at Dave’s Old Fashioned Soda Fountain and Chocolate Drop Candy Store, and more…….

But before you put on your walking shoes and head out the door, go to geocaching.com , the official Global GPS Cache Hunt Site, and watch the introductory videos. There are lots of helpful hints on getting started, and you can even sign up for a free basic membership and enter your zip code to find geocaches in your area or an area you want to explore.

There will be 20 new caches to find for this Geocache Dash! Event.  Inside each cache containers there will be a log book to sign and date. Once found, put the cache back where you found it and move on the find another.   In many caches there might be something to take as a souvenir, but the finder is also expected to leave something in its place, so bring a stash of some geocache coins, marbles and other small trinkets in your backpack before setting off on your hunt.

Sound like fun, thousands of people worldwide do.  For more information, visit the Hutchinson Center website at www.hutchinsoncenter.umaine.edu
